Riesling is that ultra-fine grape variety which has always been on the cusp of a renaissance, beloved by many but bought infrequently; undervalued but also overestimated; overtly cerebral to some, simply hedonistic to others; in short, it is confounding in every way!
For many summers in a row, at every fledgling wine appreciation class and hallowed hall of higher wine learning, the virtues of Riesling are espoused year after year with no change in its stature or any increase in its popular appeal. If doing the same thing again and again but expecting a different result is the definition of madness, then Riesling lovers surely embrace that madness through and through!
But this is not a serious class of Riesling greats and winemaking worship. No, this is a tongue-in-cheek look at Riesling producers who have gone against the grain, made something wholly original and delicious without necessarily following the archetypes of their origins. From the Pfalz to the Czech Republic; upstate New York to rural Victoria and everywhere in between, let us take you on a crazed journey through the electrifying, bewildering, astounding white and orange Rieslings of the rabid outskirts or the grape. Caitlin and Stephen invite you to join the madness - it’s GOING to be fun.
