Whareongaonga Bay is a spectacular place to visit and has an interesting history as well. It has been settled for a very long time with up to 130 whare in the bay at one time. An urupa is marked by pou standing just behind the beach. In 1868 it was the site of Te Kooti’s landing from the Chatham Islands.
There is also some recent history - you can see the remnants of a wharf that was used by barges to transport rock to Gisborne for construction of the Gisborne Harbour breakwater.
We follow a long downhill farm track, then climb uphill again. Ph: Gillian 867 4591, 027 645 6880
