Not far from taniwha Whātaitai, pop-up maker space and exhibition 'Awakening the Taniwha' brings the Surrealist exquisite corpse mode of collaboration to Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington, and offers the taniwha as a metaphor for Covid-19, the pandemic, vaccines, mandates and much more.

Taniwha are supernatural creatures who inhabit rivers, lakes, caves or the sea - some are terrifying, others protective. Many were said to have accompanied our Polynesian ancestors to Āotearoa. Taniwha are our ancient guide to resource management and offer us a new way to navigate our understanding of pandemic.

At 106 Courtney Place, you are invited to make your own taniwha through various mediums: master carver Natanahira Pona, and artists Ngaroma Riley and Frank Topia have provided resources. The space holds a reading and conversational/writing room for sharing perspectives and a weaving space while an exhibition will include viewings of the 60 Te Pūtahitanga artists original artworks. The full 72-metre long banner of Te Pūtahitanga wraps around Te Ngākau Civic Square and is available to view 24/7.

Drop by 106 Courtney Place to weave, read, draw and learn about taniwha, why tupuna held them in such high esteem, how we can maintain relationships with them today and how we can embrace kaitiakitanga or collective guardianship.

Please note: All are welcome, with Covid-19 guidelines in place. Given the 'Red' traffic light setting, group bookings are preferred over drop-in. Please get in contact to discuss private group bookings: these are possible!

We look forward to helping you awaken your own taniwha! Mauri ora!
