MIGHT COULD, an art project space, is pleased to present an exhibition of works by photographer, performer and ceramicist, Andrew Leo Stansbury (b. 1986, Texas). Stansbury’s first exhibition in Aotearoa will include photographs and a video performance. Andrew Leo Stansbury: Infestation questions popularised ideals of beauty and desire.

Opening: 22 July 2022, 5.30pm. All welcome.

Five larger-than-life photographs form the centerpiece of Infestation. These are described by Stansbury as “what it means to be consumed and infected by a toxic individual that caused harm due to their unfaithfulness”. The photographs are self-portraits of the artist stripped bare apart from donning emotions of the relationship in a physical form. The sentiments are ceramic objects, meticulous and painstakingly created. The photographs are touching, sentimental and confronting all at once.

Andrew Leo Stansbury “seeks not to appease, but rather to confront their audience.
Through a remixing of material, they consume and integrate performance, photography and process-oriented craft to create a unique moment.” A queer ceramic-based performance artist from Cuero and San Antonio, Texas, they create their own alternative version of beauty—a beauty that embraces and is influenced by the unexpected and the traumatic.

Andrew Leo Stansbury is a Lecturer/Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota Morris, teaching Ceramics and Photography and the Gallery Technician for the Edward J. and Helen Jane Morrison Gallery. In 2018, they were awarded as one of the NCECA (National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts) Emerging Artists. They received their MFA from the University of Massachusetts|Dartmouth in 2017 and were a member of the artist collective The Lullwood Group. Previously, they received their BFA from University of Texas, San Antonio in 2011, and their AA & AS from Victoria College, Texas in 2009.
