Eid festivals are joyous occasions in the Muslim calendar that mark the end of Ramadan, which involves a month of fasting from dawn to sunset. During Ramadan children eagerly look forward to Eid, because it is a time for celebrations, gift-giving and feasting on sweet treats. It is also a time for reconnecting with family, friends and colleagues.

Eid festivals tend to be all about the children – allowing them to have a special time to celebrate and have fun. In turn the parents, grandparents, extended family and friends all enjoy watching the children having fun. As they grow up, children will fondly remember previous Eid festivals and eagerly look forward to the next ones.

Picture lanterns and festive lights strung overhead and food vendors selling traditional ethnic Muslim treats and hot drinks and fresh juices. There will be designated seating areas and plenty of space to mingle. Small bands will add to the festive atmosphere by playing ethnic Muslim music and singing traditional songs. There will be plenty of entertainment for children including a bouncy castle, giant games, face painting and henna art stalls, popcorn and cotton candy.

This family-friendly event is an excellent opportunity to share one of our favourite celebrations during the Muslim Calendar year with all of Christchurch.
