From local artist Tina Das comes Womaniya: A Peak into Woman’s Emotions.

A Hamilton-based artist, Tina works as a tutor at Art Makers and Womaniya will be one of her first solo exhibitions following the completion of her Master of Fine Arts from Wintec in 2018.

Womaniya is a collection of works inspired by Natyashastra’s Navarasa.

Navarasa translates to “Nine Emotions” with Nava signifying nine and Rasa signifying Emotions. The Navarasa is traditionally the basis for all forms of art in India whether it be music, dance, or visual art. The nine emotions included in Navarasa are Shringara (love/beauty), Hasya (laughter), Karuna (sorrow), Raudra (anger), Veera (heroism/courage), Bhayanaka (terror/fear), Bibhatsya (disgust), Adbutha (surprise/wonder), and Shantha (peace or tranquility).

A collection of finely detailed paintings, Womaniya focuses on how each of “The Nine Emotions” are seen and experienced from a women’s perspective with each of the works being directly inspired by one of the Navarasa and telling the story of a woman’s encounter with Rasa, giving us “a peak into woman’s emotions”.

Womaniya will be exhibiting in The Nancy Caiger Gallery July 7- August 2. The Adda (get together/official launch) for the exhibition will be taking place on Wednesday July 14, 5:30pm. All are welcome to attend this FREE EVENT to check out the exhibition, hear from Tina and guest speaker Sylvie Bolstad- Founder of the Artmakers Trust.
