TMD Artist Talk - 25 Years In the Making

Dates

  • Sat 27 Mar 2021, 5:00pm–6:00pm

Restrictions

All Ages

Join this line up of artists from Aotearoa’s most renowned and long-standing international street art collective, The Most Dedicated, as they discuss what it takes to operate as a creative collective for nearly 25 years.

The rise of TMD has its origins in Auckland’s mid 90’s graffiti scene, where the post-recessionary environment after the 1987 stock market crash was the perfect incubator. From the decrepit rail infrastructure to abandoned buildings and vacant lots - the city provided an abundance of grey area where ragtag young people could forge lifelong bonds, while cementing their sense of identity. Today TMD functions as an artist collective with over 25 members comprising underground heroes as well as many of Aotearoa’s first global graffiti stars. With an emphasis on functioning democratically, building consensus and moving in unison, hear about how this graffiti supergroup has stuck it out for a quarter-century.

Speakers include ASKEW ONE (Elliot O’Donnell), LADY DIVA (Janine Williams), PHAT ONE (Charles Williams), BERST (Dr. Bobby Hung), DYLE52 aka SAVES (Benjamin Work) and PEST5 (Jonny 4 Higher).

The Most Dedicated: Street Art Festival takes place in Lower Hutt CBD over four days from 27 – 30 March 2021, featuring a selection of new murals painted throughout the Lower Hutt CBD by Aotearoa’s most renowned international street art collective. The festival marks the opening of TMD’s first major public museum display, The Most Dedicated: An Aotearoa Graffiti Story, on exhibition at The Dowse Art Museum from 27 March - 22 August 2021. Featuring the work of over 20 of its members, visitors will be able to delve into the origins and evolution of this graffiti supergroup.
