The Maltese Falcon is one of the great films; one of the first film noirs, it established Humphrey Bogart as a leading man and introduced one of cinema's preeminent stylists in director John Huston.
The film begins with a glamorous woman walking into a detective agency, and by the end of the day, everything has changed. The plot is almost besides the point in this thrilling example of cinematic artistry.
"It's all style. It isn't violence or chases, but the way the actors look, move, speak and embody their characters. Under the style is attitude: Hard men, in a hard season, in a society emerging from Depression and heading for war, are motivated by greed and capable of murder." - Roger Ebert
