The Great Create Workshop Series

Dive into the Great Create workshop series!

Join us for a series of new creative workshops as we celebrate our local Ōtepoti/Dunedin creatives.
We’ve selected four local artists to deliver workshops in pottery, intuitive collage, stencilling, and illustrative cut-outs. So grab your friends and create something fun over a glass of wine in our beautiful lantern space. Tickets will be $45 per workshop and include a glass of house wine, house tap beer, or non-alcoholic beverage plus all your materials and the guidance of highly accomplished artists. Add on $15 to pre-order dinner for yourself prior to the workshop.
Our cafe will be open for dining from 530pm with workshops commencing at 630pm.

*Workshops will be run with level 2 restrictions in place. Signing in, social distancing, and mask-wearing when not eating or drinking.*

November 4: Terracotta planters with Marion Familton

Marion trained at the Dunedin School of Art in the 1980s studying sculpture and ceramics and was a long term member of the Stuart Street Potters Cooperative until this year. Marion’s work will be seen at the Ceramics NZ (formerly know as NZ Potters) in their 60th centennial exhibition hosted by the Otago Art Society in the Dunedin Railway Station 23rd October - 20th November. She enjoys the odd bit of teaching and taking workshops.

For this instalment, local ceramist Marion Hamilton will guide you through the basics of creating a terracotta planter. You will learn techniques like coiling and pinch pots to create your planter or folding origami-style to create a succulent dish.

*Marion will take away your creation to be fired, we will notify you when it’s available for pick up.

November 18: Intuitive collage with Jo Bone.

Jo Bone is an artist, illustrator and nature sketcher who loves to draw, paint and experiment creatively. She is passionate about helping others to rediscover the joy of self-expression through creative activity.

Join Jo for a fun creative experience with intuitive collage. An opportunity to quiet your everyday mind and invite imagery to express the story of your inner world. Create your own unique artwork using words, quotes, pictures and backgrounds from the wide assortment Jo will have on hand. No level of artistic ability required.

An evening of discovery and self-connection in the company of new friends.

25 November: Botanical stencil “Kowhai & Harakeke” with Maggie Covell

Maggie Covell is a Dunedin based visual artist with a strong illustrative + design background, currently studying Masters in fine Art at the Dunedin School of Art - with a focus on wallpaper making. Maggie also has a range of illustrated books + prints sold in Museums, galleries, and Lifestyle boutiques around NZ.

Join Maggie and learn how to make stylish art prints from stencils including making your own stencil!
Printmaking features a how-to guide with card stencils, which is an easy, no- fuss approach and no previous experience required. Patterns feature lush native botanicals, geometric and organic shapes in a contemporary palette - all materials provided.

15 December: Illustrated cut-outs with Lissie Brown

Lissie Brown is a Dunedin/Ōtepoti based with more than 25 years experience in the art sector. Lissie has experience in a variety of media and techniques and has a broad knowledge and understanding of both practice and theory within art and education. Lissie is currently completing her MFA at Dunedin School of Art, her practice involves ceramics, sculpture and drawing.

Using Richard Kileen as an artist model Lissie will guide you through the creation of an illustrated cut-out artwork. Escape the relational logic of traditional picture-making by creating a collection of images/image fragments using a range of media including paint, paint pens, sharpies/felts and graphite which you will then arrange/cluster in any order you see fit!
