Gardening teacher, Kath Irvine, has been growing all the vegetables to feed her family of six for 20 good years. An organic gardener and designer Kath’s garden is spray-free, natural and low input, meaning, with smart design, her garden hums - saving time, money, and the planet!

Kath Irvine shares her wealth of knowledge in her new book 'The Edible Backyard - a practical guide to growing organic fruit and vegetables all year round.'
In conversation with former arts and culture editor of the New Zealand Listener, Guy Somerset, Kath will guide us through her easy-to-understand book suitable for any skill level – from beginners setting up a new garden from scratch to advanced green-thumbs seeking deeper knowledge.

Featherston Booktown is buzzing with excitement to bring Kath to Masterton for her first Wairarapa book launch. We are working with the wonderful organisers of the Wairarapa Garden Tour, who each year create a two-day, self-drive garden tour of unique gardens in either the South or North Wairarapa.

This event has been timed to enable garden tourists, who have spent the day wandering around beautiful gardens in the Masterton area on the Pukaha Wairarapa Garden Tour, to take the weight of their feet, sip a glass of wine and listen to this fascinating, down to earth, garden sage. Set in the historic Masterton Solway Showgrounds – inside the Trades Hall 1 if the weather is inclement, or outside under majestic trees if the weather is stunning, this will be a glorious event to top off a perfect gardening day.

Our generous sponsor for this event is GardenBarn, 179 High Street, Masterton. GardenBarn has a complete range of garden products to add value and ambiance to your home and make your property stand out. Situated very close to the Trade Hall 1 venue, they are open every day from 8:30 am - 6:00 pm. Our bookseller for this event is Joanna Ludbrook of Featherston-based bookstore Chicken and Frog Bookstore. If you purchase The Edible Backyard in-store while in Featherston, you will receive a 5% discount on the RRP.

Because of the current COVID Alert Level two environment, we will ensure that your safety is paramount and we will adhere to Government regulations of social distancing and contact tracing. We ask that you arrive with your mask on, although you can remove it when eating or drinking. The ticket price includes a glass of wine or Mela fruit juice or water and snacks which will be served to you before the event starts. The doors will open from 4:00 pm, so if you can, please arrive early so that we can serve you in time.

There will be only 100 tickets available for this event – so book early!
