The Disappearing Woman presents a tableau of woven, crafted and painted objects in a Victorian parlour: a place where young women once sat to do their needlework. Each element of the tableau, however, has been given a twist that transforms a space associated with dutiful accomplishment into an arena for play, escape, and masquerade.

Threadwork artist Cathrine Lloyd and jeweller Emily Efford have taken their cue from surrealist fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli (1890-1973) and surrealist painter and costume designer Remedios Varo (1908-1963) whom they studied as part of postgraduate degrees at Victoria University in 2015. Their individual research projects, supervised by Chiaroni, provided the intellectual constructs that they have worked through in visual form in this exhibition.
