A symposium on the Art of Kōwhaiwhai and Māori Curatorial Practice, in association with the exhibition Sandy Adsett: Toi Koru.

The symposium begins with a blessing and opening celebrations for Toi Koru and two other exhibitions that complement Adsett's show: Ahi Toi, an exhibition featuring Toihoukura and Toimairangi Schools of Māori art alumni; and Wero, a solo exhibition by Wellington-based painter and tā moko artist Victor Te Paa.

10.20am: Welcoming address: Arapata Hakiwai, Kaihautū | Māori Co-leader, Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, with June Grant, artist and friend

11am: Toi Koru: Sandy Adsett artist talk in conversation with Reuben Friend

12pm: Live Tā Moko demonstration by artist Victor Te Paa

1.30pm: Kōwhaiwhai in contemporary art panel discussion

Robert Jahnke ONZM (facilitator), Kura Te Waru Rewiri and Ngataiharuru Taepa

3pm: Māori curatorial frameworks panel discussion

Nigel Borell (facilitator), Dr. David Butts and Sandy Adsett discuss the first iwi-led exhibition Ngā Tukemata: Ngā Taonga o Ngāti Kahungunu, 1986.

3:30pm: Māori curatorial practice today and tomorrow

Nigel Borell (facilitator), Megan Tamati-Quennell and Tim Walker discuss curatorial frameworks for contemporary Māori art, beginning with Kohia ko Taikaka Anake at the National Art Gallery of New Zealand in 1990.

4pm: Refreshments
