In its ongoing commitment to support and provide opportunities for live performance, the Wallace Arts Trust is proud to present the Sunday Concert Series 2021 – an eclectic array of musicians and musical genres at the Wallace Arts Centre, Pah Homestead showcasing local performers.

Cousin Alice and Ian Sinclair present:Leonard Cohen ’n Flamenco Gumbo – Savour a hot soup flavoured with Leonard Cohen’s flamenco roots, Amy Winehouse and original music from Alice and Ian.

Featuring flamenco dancer Krasna Martinic Ristori.

Ian’s uncle, Jose Cosio, or Uncle Joe, as he was known, was president of the Auckland Spanish Club. A flamenco guitarist himself, he often had visiting flamenco artists from Spain in his house.
“When I was a boy Uncle Joe’s encouragement made my unusual preference for flamenco seem ok in a kiwi culture of rugby racing and beer.”

By the age of 21 he was playing professionally in New Zealand and at 22 he was off on the first of many trips to Spain studying under Miguel Garcia of the Jose Greco Dance Company, Jose Luis Postigo and Juan del Gastor. Since he quit TV to return full time to flamenco he has been busy, working with Isabel Rivera Cuenca and her troupe from Barcelona, Anna LLoris from Madrid and more recently Krasna Martinic from Santiago Chile. He also got a chance to write the live flamenco for a Spanish play Ay Carmelo, which was performed for the Spanish Ambassador.

Now Ian and Krasna will perform with Cousin Alice in “Leonard Cohen n Flamenco Gumbo“.

“Not long ago I discovered Leonard Cohen had revealed all his music was inspired by flamenco. So why not put it to the flamenco test? Why not see if it does indeed make flamenco?” An exciting musical experiment featuring Ian’s flamenco guitar, Krasna’s dancing heritage, and Cousin Alice’s powerful evocative musical repertoire.
