An evening of music at Pah Homestead with Andrew Beer and Sarah Watkins - winners of Best Classical Artists at the 2020 NZ Music Awards.

We are delighted to welcome back APO Concertmaster Andrew Beer and acclaimed collaborative pianist Sarah Watkins, winners of Best Classical Artists at the NZ Music Awards at the end of 2020. Andrew and Sarah are keen to continue sharing the music of New Zealand alongside well-loved classics, in a programme ranging from Mozart and Clara Schumann, to Gao Ping, Gillian Whitehead and John Corigliano.

PROGRAMME
Mozart – Sonata in A Major, K. 526 (1787)
Gao Ping – Questioning the Mountains (2008)
Gillian Whitehead – Torua (2011)

Intermission

Clara Schumann – Three Romances, Op. 22 (1878)
John Corigliano – Sonata (1964)

ANDREW BEER – Violin
Violinist Andrew Beer has been described as a “virtuoso soloist” by the San Francisco Classical Voice, as possessing a “glorious string tone” by Strad Magazine, and as a “musical gift” by the New York Times.

He has performed extensively throughout North America, Europe, Asia and Australasia, and his performances have been broadcast on NHK Japan, Vietnamese television, CBC Radio-Canada, Minnesota Public Radio, Vermont Public Radio, WQXR New York, Radio NZ Concert FM and ABC Classic FM.

SARAH WATKINS – Piano
Sarah’s lifelong love for accompanying and chamber music has led to an impressive career as a performer and recording artist. She is perhaps best known to New Zealand audiences as a founding member of NZTrio; after 16 years in that role, Sarah left the group in June 2018 to actively pursue other musical passions.

Sarah is a graduate of the University of Canterbury (NZ) and the Juilliard School (NY), where she earned both MM and DMA degrees in collaborative piano. She was recently appointed as an artist teacher and chamber music coach at the University of Auckland, and she enjoys a wide variety of collaborations with musicians all over New Zealand.
