A special screening of highly acclaimed New Zealand film 'Cousins' at Te Raukura ki Kāpiti will be helping to raise funds for the redevelopment of Mahara Gallery. The event will feature a post screening Q&A with producer and writer Briar Grace-Smith.

Based on the 1992 novel by Patricia Grace, the film follows the journeys of three cousins in their lifelong search for each other. The film has enjoyed significant success both in Aotearoa and internationally, playing at the Hawaiian Film Festival in 2021, and also released in Australia, Canada, the US, UK and on Netflix. In July, Briar was awarded the 2021 Women in Film & Television (WIFT) Mana Wāhine Award.

Also screening will be the short film 'Tui', written and directed by Kāpiti College alumni Awa Puna. This film is a short film finalist in the upcoming New Zealand Film Festival.

The event will be held under Covid Alert Levels One or Two, with physical distancing and Covid safety measures in place. Tickets may therefore be limited, so booking is essential. Bar service will be available and light refreshment goodies are included in the ticket price of $30.

All proceeds will go towards the upgrade of Mahara Gallery.

Mahara Gallery is the district public gallery for Kāpiti. Its redevelopment involves rebuilding the current gallery on its existing site in Mahara Place, Waikanae. The upgrade will deliver a purpose-built gallery with double the number of exhibition galleries and almost triple the amount of exhibition space. The improved gallery will be fitting for our creative community and a facility which will be able to house and display the Field Collection and other taonga; it’ll be a cultural hub for our growing district.
