Solarplate is a quick, easy, non-toxic alternative to traditional etching techniques.

Explore the fundamentals of transferring an image onto the plate using the simple power of the sun. If overcast, a lightbox will be used. Learn tips and tricks on inking, wiping, and printing your Solarplate on dampened paper and an etching press.

You’ll then explore different possibilities for extending your finished image using simple, but effective techniques including embossing, chine collè, gold leaf, finished etching.

By the end of the workshop, you’ll take home with you an original etching to hang on your wall or gift to a friend.

Don’t miss out - only 9 spaces available! All levels welcome. Age: 16 +

What to bring:
• An apron or old shirt as you’ll be working with oil-based inks.
• Your tutor will be in touch with you regarding an image for your plate.
• All materials provided.

About the tutor:

Virginia Guy is a photographer and printmaker based in Whangarei. Her desire to work with Solarplate stemmed from a sense of ownership and control that the medium gave her when hand-printing her photographic images. She enjoys pushing the boundaries of the printed image by incorporating different techniques into the finished image such as gold leaf, embossing, chine collè, hand stitching and hand colouring. Seeing herself as a storyteller, her images are imbued with personal symbolism. She works from her print studio at home where she teaches printmaking classes and is a long-time member of Te Kowhai Print Trust.

Note: See Virginia give a FREE demo of her Solarplate technique on Saturday, 6 November 2:15pm – 3:00pm at Studio One Toi Tū, Room 11.
