This lecture is the 4th of 6 in our 2021 Winter Lecture Series. It will be given by Brendon Dunphy (Te Apārangi Sponsored Speaker) is a Senior Lecturer in Biological Sciences at Auckland University.

As the seabird capital of the world, New Zealand is a fantastic place to explore the physiology of our enigmatic seabird taxa and utilise them as ocean indicators. Unfortunately, our seabirds are also among the most threatened groups in the world, thus effective conservation of these precious taonga is paramount.

In this Lecture Brendon will describe how we have been meshing together the lab with the field. Our goal here is to understand what responses seabirds make to shifts in environmental conditions, and identify when we should worry. Brendon will use examples encompassing petrels, shearwaters, and penguins to illustrate how we are using multiple lines of complementary information to listen to what the birds are telling us about oceanic change and how to improve conversation efforts.
