QiGong is the art of cultivating Qi.
Qi translated as 'life-force' or 'breath of life', similar to the yogic understanding of Prana. The word Gong means to practice and cultivate until mastery has been achieved. Traditionally QiGong is part of Daoist and Buddhist spiritual cultivation, where the extra Qi cultivated is used as fuel for inner growth. Once a secretive teaching, passed through strict lineages in the East, QiGong is now becoming more available to the world. It has been scientifically studied over the last few decades and some of the proven benefits of QiGong practice include stress reduction, increased oxygenation and blood circulation, blood pressure reduction, flexibility and toning of the body and more.
Join us for a workshop to learn the foundations of QiGong, for without these, the deeper jewels remained locked away. There are over 10,000 styles of QiGong, which are vastly different, however they all share key concepts of unifying the body, breath and mind.
The first part of the workshop will cover foundation principles and the first pillar of QiGong; aligning and conditioning the body. The exercises taught are to help relax the large muscle groups, stretching and connecting the soft-tissues and fascia lines (for they are the riverbeds of Qi meridian channels) and learning how to connect the body into a whole, unfragmented unit. This will help Qi to better flow through the body - for Qi cannot navigate smoothly through tension.
The second pillar of QiGong foundations is learning to optimise our breath. The Chinese character Qi contains the picture of breath/air/oxygen, which forms the basis of human energy metabolism. This workshop will focus on the foundation breathing technique known as abdominal-diaphragmatic, belly breathing or baby breathing. This way of breathing oxygenates the body, activates the para-sympathetic "rest and digest" nervous system, calming and working as an anchor for the mind.
The third foundation pillar covered in the workshop is the mind and cognitive aspect of QiGong. There is a classical QiGong saying: "Where the mind goes, Qi follows". We will learn what this means, along with the foundational techniques and qualities we wish to cultivate in our meditation practice: the ability to be still, anchor our minds to the breath, cultivating attention/awareness and having a calm, undistracted, content mind.
- The event is designed for beginners with no previous experience, however those with previous experience are always welcome to fortify their foundations... and perhaps you will find some missing puzzle pieces.
- A number of postures and techniques will be covered. Most of them are easily transferable to your daily life A video with key practices is included in the price.
- An ideal workshop for the start of a new year, covering simple yet profound practices to enhance your Qi, body and mind.
