Nau mai haere mai, you are welcome to attend an introduction and beyond to raranga (weaving) with harakeke (flax). These classes held over the coming months at the Leonard Cockayne Centre aim to spread knowledge of the geography and the traditional weaving and healing practices utilising the native plants at Ōtari Wilton’s Bush. We hope to bring our surrounding community together and get to know one another on a regular basis. Starting with tikanaga and making putiputi (flowers), overtime, continued attendees will develop their skills and craft new objects.
Harakeke and other tools will be provided until you have been taught tikanga for harvesting your own.
You will walk away with small woven taonga at the end of each class. Rongoā (Māori healing) tea and other light refreshments will be provided.
