The Arts Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora formerly known as Canterbury College, has always been a place of history, architecture, and creativity. Our new architecture programme explores the neo-gothic style at The Arts Centre and other architectural design across the world.

For the first time, we are allowing students behind the fences and into the stonemason’s tent, where most of the intricately carved stonework that graces The Arts Centre’s walls is created. Students will be able to talk to an expert in their field about stonemasonry, one of the oldest professions and art forms in human history.

Students will learn what makes a building neo-gothic and embark upon a scavenger hunt trying to find these unique design features. They will come away with a glossary of neo-gothic vocabulary and their own take home hands-on activity. They will also learn about key individuals that are historically linked with The Arts Centre and its buildings.
