Pét-Nat, or pétillant-naturel, is not new - like many other styles of wine that scatter the landscape of modern winemaking, its current fervour is rooted in ancient production. The revival of the sparkling wine style, also referred to as méthode ancestral, can be credited to the joyful wines that are created; wines that happily flaunt their vibrancy and refreshing nature. With more people clamouring to consume and produce pét-nat, the spread of flavour is stretching ever further and diversity within the category is greater than ever.
New Zealand has not remained immune to the infectious nature of pét-nat. Across the country, winemakers are experimenting with the style, utilising a wide swath of grape varieties to create an expansive selection of the buoyant bubbly. On January 20, we will be taking a look at 8 expressions from some of New Zealand’s emerging wine voices, alongside those that are perhaps more established. Instead of a technical journey into production, we want to celebrate these wines that command smiles and beg to be drunken amidst friends.
The line-up of wines will be confirmed in January, but expect a range of shades, grape varieties and techniques from 8 winemakers across New Zealand.
