Join Taranaki archaeologist Ivan Bruce to discuss the language of the Taranaki War memorials in times of peace, encouraging the audience to reflect on whose history this is, and whose perspective of history is represented by these monuments?

Ivan Bruce is the current Heritage Taranaki chairman, and has worked as an archaeologist in the Taranaki region for over twenty years. During his career he has researched and reported widely on the battlegrounds and monuments of the Taranaki Wars. His work has required Ivan to grapple with the significance and meanings of these sites and their place in our landscape and he hopes to offer a balanced view in support of their continued existence.

Ivan Bruce’s talk On Monuments, originally scheduled as a free event during February, was postponed due to the Covid-19 Alert Level change. Ivan will instead present as part of the Monica Brewster Evening series. There is usually a charge for the Monica Brewster Evenings but we are offering free tickets for April to reflect Ivan’s original event. If you have ever been curious about attending a Monica Brewster Evening now is the perfect time to experience one.

The Monica Brewster Evenings (MBE) in association with Govett Quilliam – The Lawyers bring an impressive array of national and international artists and cultural thinkers to New Plymouth. For a different kind of night out, join us for talks, presentations and performances in a casual and intimate atmosphere.
