Update: COVID LEVEL 2 - EVENT RESCHEDULED to the 10th - 11th July 2021.

Bread and Butter Gallery Ltd are excited to announce that we’ll be having a pop-up event in Island Bay, showcasing New Zealand's renowned artist Michael Smither original artworks and screenprints on the weekend of 10th - 11th July 2021.

The address of the pop-up event will be held at 4/410 The Esplanade, Island Bay, Wellington (next door to The Beach House Cafe, Island Bay).

Michael Smither is one of New Zealand’s most sought-after master artists today. His iconic contemporary abstract and highly coloured harmonic paintings and screenprints capture a unique and often very personal observation of his world. In 2004 Smither was made a CNZM for his services to art. "It is important to acknowledge and celebrate the work and achievement of this New Zealand artist who shows us so much of where we come from and of what shapes us." - Helen Clark, former Prime Minister & Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage.

Michael Smither has been painting for more than 60 years and his works are held in numerous public collections including Auckland Art Gallery and Te Papa Tongawera Museum of New Zealand and prominent private collections. During his long and prolific career, Michael Smither has found continuing inspiration from his immediate environment. This has resulted in a large body of work that is synonymous with the New Zealand landscape and culture. He paints coastal and mountain landscapes, family and children, domestic objects and religious symbols. He also has a continued interest in reflections with a large collection of famous colour works that are strongly influenced by his knowledge of music and harmonics. In October 2019, Michael Smither set the record for the most expensive painting sold that was painted by a living New Zealand artist when his 1967 painting entitled 'Sea Wall and Kingfisher' sold for $342,000.

Join us to view some of his more recently painted original masterpieces, as well as screen-printed versions of his artworks.

Michael Smither’s nationwide art dealer Christine Rabarts Dip Art (Hons) is curating the show in Wellington and will be available for private consultation appointments after the show and while in the area.
