Jane Tan strives to create abstract paintings that communicate feelings and a state of being. The fragility and vulnerability that is an inescapable part of being human is a rich seam in her art practice. Jane says "I began this project with picking out various pigmented clay & rocks from the excavation of our building site for our new home out of curiosity. Without a clear intention at that stage, these pigments have become an integral part of the process towards this body of work as the meditative, mindful process of sorting, grinding, sifting and repetition provides me comfort, solace and space for thinking – a search or satisfaction within my art practice that feels finally answered."

The title of the exhibition 'rub me out & draw me back in again' is a memory from Jane's childhood. Her mother had the condition fibromyalgia and used these words when coping with the pain in her body. Jane's art practice is centred on the use of movement and gestural marks. Sometimes she will even use her body - in this case, her forearm, to apply paint to the canvas. For Jane, painting is a holistic physical & spiritual existential experience.
