Take this opportunity to have a guided tour around the spiritual heart of Canterbury’s arts scene; an iconic theatrical venue that has played host to spectacular shows and spellbound audiences for more than a century.

As we navigate the Covid-19 landscape, the ITR has continued to provide strong support for our industry and our community through COVID-19. This includes; being innovative, creative and agile.

Our main priorities are the positive impacts the theatre has on our community and the welfare of people in our industry. We care about and support our community, the arts and the live events industry.

Front of House areas – Stalls Foyer, Ravenscar Lounge, The Gloucester Room, The Grand
Please note that the stage and backstage areas will not be open.

Coffee and refreshments will be available to purchase from our Stalls Bar.

Ornamental, expressive and much-loved, this iconic Edwardian building, the only of this era still standing in New Zealand, has long served as one of Christchurch’s pre-eminent performance venues. The grand marble staircase, plush Arts & Crafts style carpets, chandeliers and rich wallpapering make for an imaginative, sumptuous interior. Royal boxes are regal proof of the theatre’s long history, while the careful restoration of the hand-painted canvas ceiling – the dome adorned with scenes from a Midsummer Night’s Dream – is a triumph. All these elements combine to create a sense of opulence and theatre.
