Enjoy Hilma af Klint: The Secret Paintings and Pages of Mercury by Rita Angus, Andrew Beck, and Séraphine Pick under the micro moon.

In this special, after-hours event, we invite our audiences to slow down, dwell in the Gallery spaces and bathe in waves of wondrous sound as you explore the artworks.

To start the evening, Nell Thomas and friends will create sonic pathways from a range of acoustic instruments and sound makers. The density of resonant sound in the gallery will wax and wane, from sparse to swirling.

Drop into our education studio to create your own botanic drawings inspired by Hilma af Klint’s illustrations and close regard for nature.

In conversation with Senior Curator Aaron Lister local artists Séraphine Pick and Andrew Beck discuss collaboration in their latest exhibition Pages of Mercury which includes Rita Angus’ moon drawings. The Gallery skylights will be open this evening, especially for this exhibition.

Three improvising ensembles respond to The Ten Largest, Hilma af Klint’s paradisiacally beautiful paintings that articulate the four stages of life – childhood, youth, adulthood and old age. Each ensemble will respond to the themes, colours and forms of The Ten Largest, drawing on the meditative and spiritual facets of jazz tradition.

Next get closer to the moon with a short, illustrated talk from amateur astronomer Samuel Leske. See close up footage of the moon and hear how it has been captured by artists and scientists over time. The moon inspires us all, be inspired by it. Then, weather permitting, we will take telescopes outside into Civic Square and behold the micro moon!

The night closes with a close-looking tour and a sound bath, to leave you refreshed and reawakened. At midnight, goodnight.
