Dunedin Fringe

This is an irreverent show not a reverent show, there is no place for reverence here.

Join multi-award-winning comedian James Nokise, together with DJ Don Luchito, for an hour of laughter at the expense of Captain James Cook as he voyages through the many cultures of the Pacific spreading ‘enlightenment’ to a people who lived in ecologically sustainable structures and knew how to sail without compasses…

A performance featuring irreverent history, Pacific poetry and dynamic soundscapes - it’s basically the Disney film Moana, told by two guys who don’t look like The Rock, who even combined wouldn’t be the same size as The Rock.

James Nokise’s many accolades include being twice nominated for the Billy T James Award, and taking out Best Comedy the last time he appeared at the Dunedin Fringe Festival, in 2014 with his show Let’s Talk About the Golliwogs. In 2019, James won the Fred Award which recognises the best New Zealand show in the NZ International Comedy Festival, and in 2020 his critically acclaimed podcast, Eating Fried Chicken on RNZ, was nominated for the Voyager Media Award 2020. This is a performer at the top of his game – and we’re lucky enough to have him based in NZ currently.

DJ Don Luchito has been spinning tunes since the late 90’s and has supported international acts like Blackalicious, Immortal Technique and RZA. He has an eclectic collection of music ranging from Jazz to Funk, Reggae to Hip Hop, Soul to Disco, Dancehall, Dub, 80’s New Wave and RnB with a sprinkling of Ska, Rock & Latin and just about anything that will get the party going. He’s dabbled in sound engineering and mixing, putting his talent to good use at Radio Active 88.6fm mixing an array of local bands for their weekly live-to air. He’s also the host of The Amplifier Show, promoting local content and interviewing an array of guests from the music scene, to the food industry, poets, thespians, comedians, authors and astronomers.
