Wine Sentience

Join sommelier Caitlin Perlman and Master of Wine Stephen Wong on an exploration through the special vineyard sites in New Zealand which are gaining recognition. Where traditionally, most New Zealand vineyards of note were owned or associated to only one winery or producer, over the past 15 years, some special grower-owned vineyards have been growing in reputation amongst winemakers, and consequently, each of them makes a version of wine from that vineyard. This is not a new concept - the system of terroir-classification in Burgundy is predicated on a similar system which is recognised as a 'cru'. *In fact, it is much rarer for a single classified vineyard to be owned in its entirety by one producer - in those cases, the bottles are almost always marked as 'monopole' to advertise the fact.

In a new education series, Cru NZ, we will be exploring the cru of New Zealand; vineyard sites that over the years, and made by people with different philosophies, have been able to show their individuality. In our first class of the series, we will be focusing on the crus of Marlborough - home to 70% of all New Zealand’s land under vine - an obvious place to start. In addition to the massive sprawl of vines for large volume wines, the region also boasts an amazing number of carefully planted sites that have helped narrow the focus on sub-regionality and the corresponding quality. Our focus for this class is on four vineyards planted within their respective valleys that comprise the greater Southern Valleys sub-region: Clayvin, Churton, Cowley (Auntsfield), and The Wrekin.

To explore single site expression of Sauvignon Blanc from the Churton vineyard in Waihopai we have: 2019 Churton Natural State Pied de Cuve, 2018 Pyramid Valley Sauvignon Blanc, and 2017 Kelly Washington Sauvignon Blanc. From The Wrekin vineyard we have two Chardonnays: 2020 Deep Down Chardonnay, 2019 Astrolabe Wrekin Chardonnay. From the Clayvin Vineyard, we will be pouring: 2017 Fromm Clayvin Pinot Noir, 2017 Te Whare Ra Clayvin Pinot Noir, and the 2016 Giesen Clayvin Pinot Noir. And from the Cowley vineyard in Ben Morvan: 2017 Corofin Cowley Pinot Noir, and 2019 Auntsfield Pinot Noir. The ten wines will be poured in flights divided by site to allow for insight into the individual vineyard traits.
