Get creative with Liang Cui, a visual artist from China.

Liang's goal is not to teach a certain technique, but to foster an understanding of art-making, and how we can engage in the act of art-making by introducing the force of gravity.

For ages 15+. Spaces strictly limited to 10. Please call Helen at the Hub on 04 562 9050, or email helen.murray@huttcity.govt.nz to book your place.

About the sessions:
Participants will select some acrylic paint colours, mix them and drop them from different heights on to their canvases. Patterns formed in this way call for a further engagement from the participants, to try to imagine and explore the potential of these patterns. During the process, new elements will be brought into the painting, such as dots, lines, and different shapes. Various tools can be employed to further adjust the patterns. For example, slightly scratching the surface of the dropped paint with a knife or spoon can expose the colour beneath the top layer of paint.

This art activity is about an experience of art-making. By bringing in the force of gravity, it makes the making process always open to new possibilities and asks for the participants’ negotiation with these possibilities. The whole activity is divided into three sessions. It begins with the introduction of basic concepts and practice of basic elements, and ends by practising to combine visual effects from dropping acrylic paint with more regular and planned patterns to finish a painting.
