The beautiful melodies of Cole Porter hits such as Begin the Beguine, Anything Goes and I Love Paris will be familiar to lovers of the musical theatre genre. “However, the apparent simplicity of these tunes is deceptive,” says Cantando’s Musical Director Kolitha Jayatunge. “Porter was a master of syncopated rhythm and interesting harmony and Cantando has found learning the music a stimulating challenge. It is a testament to their versatility and enthusiasm that the choir has brought this programme to performance standard.”
Cantando singers come from around the Waikato region and the choir is particularly proud to be joined by other local musicians in this concert. Soprano soloist Emma Carpenter grew up in Hamilton and developed her singing and stage talents on the St Peter’s School and Hamilton Operatic musical theatre scene. Cantando’s resident accompanist, David Woodcock, will be joined by an ensemble from The Cambridge Brass Band to provide the complex musical backing required by Cole Porter’s work.
“Our audience can be assured of a wonderful night of beautiful music, evocative of the era (1930s and ‘40s) in which Porter was composing” says Kolitha. “Seats are limited, so be sure to secure yours early!”
Available from choir members or online from the Cantando Choir website. Also available from the Gallagher box office (additional fee of $3). Entry is by general admission.
