CANCELED: Unfortunately, the Foundation has had to make the difficult decision to cancel our first week of Brain Awareness Month events due to the current restrictions in Auckland and throughout New Zealand. The safety of our supporters, scientists and clinicians, and staff is paramount and we hope that we may be able to reschedule these events in the future.

About the Event

Professor Stinear’s area of expertise and research is dedicated to the personalisation of stroke rehabilitation. She utilises biomarkers which help her, and her team personalise each recovery journey of stroke patients within the Stroke Unit at the Auckland City Hospital.

Cathy was recently funded in our 2020A Grant Round for a new project which will validate what her team and she have been working on since 2017, the Time to Walking Independently after Stroke Tool (TWIST). Part of the recovery journey many stroke patients experience is learning to walk independently again. Concern for patients and family members is the timeframe for this to occur. TWIST’s aim is to assist clinicians to determine this timeframe.

This will be the focus of Cathy’s talk.

About the Speaker

Professor Cathy Stinear is a leading neuroscientist who is the Foundation’s newly appointed Council Chair. She is the head of the Department of Medicine, a professor of clinical neuroscience at the University of Auckland, and her team is embedded in the Stroke Unit at Auckland City Hospital translating her research into clinical practice every day.

Cathy is also a senior member of the New Zealand science community and joined the Neurological Foundation Scientific Advisory Committee in 2008 and chaired this committee from 2015-2019. In this role she initiated the reform of the committee’s processes to bring them in line with contemporary standards, ensuring fair and transparent assessment of funding applications.
