Napoleon Bonaparte, a mermaid and a stay in Italy - the inspirations behind the music in BOP Symphonia's 'Beethoven and Brass' concert.
Beethoven’s 'Eroica' Symphony is the centre-piece, acknowledged as one of the most influential compositions ever and remarkable for its many musical innovations. Originally written for Napoleon Bonaparte, Beethoven changed the title to 'Eroica' (Heroic) after becoming disillusioned when Napoleon crowned himself emperor.
Mendelssohn wrote the opening overture, The Fair Melusine, after watching an opera about a mermaid-like figure from middle European folklore. At the time he considered the piece 'the best'and most 'intimate' thing he had ever written.
Also on the programme is Launy Grøndahl's Concerto for Trombone. This three-movement work is challenging and dramatic but is one of the most frequently performed trombone concertos. Our featured soloist is Tauranga-based Joe Thomas. Joe studied at the NZ School of Music then worked for the NZ Army band before returning to live in his home town.
With an heroic symphony, a melodic overture and an uplifting concerto, this promises to be an interesting, musically satisfying concert.
Conducted by Justus Rozemond.
