Anna and Max went on holiday to Matamata. They stayed two nights in a house truck they found on Airbnb. They visited a movie set from an iconic film franchise. Equipped with a disposable camera and a Leica digital point ’n’ shoot, they turned their memories into prints, unofficial souvenirs, a slideshow and a vlog.

Touching on gig culture, influencers, Lorde’s new age turn, Aotearoa’s intertwined film and tourism industry, Be the hero of your own movie considers travel as a means for understanding the world around us. In the proposal for this exhibition they included a screenshot of a man standing in a stream with a GoPro pointed at his abs.

Anna and Max are friends who met at art school. They have collaborated before for The Shining (2018) at the Brooklyn scout hall and the AURA festival of moving image (2019). They have travelled internationally together. One time, they went on a beachfront holiday in Byron Bay. They both work in hopso.

Toi Pōneke Gallery is open during Alert level 2. The gallery is limited to 10 visitors at one time.
