The Bach Choir of Wellington presents Mozart’s Vesperae solennes de Confessore, K. 339 and Evening Music and Lullabies. The choir is pleased to welcome soloists from the New Zealand School of Music – Te Kōkī to the stage: Shaunagh Chambers (soprano), Kate Manahi (mezzo), Lila Crichton (tenor), and Samuel McKeever (baritone). The choir is accompanied by Douglas Mews and under the direction of Shawn Michael Condon.
Mozart’s Vesperae K. 339 is the final work he composed for liturgical use in Salzburg Cathedral and contains settings of Psalms 109-112 and 116 and is rounded off by the Magnificat. Unlike his earlier Vesperae de Dominica, K. 321, this settings weaves a more subtle and expressive musical texture on the basis of each psalm and its interpretation.
Douglas Mews will accompany works by J.S.Bach, Brahms, and César Franck on the recently restored Croft & Sons organ. The choir will also present two pieces by New Zealand composer David Hamilton that were to feature on their tour to BachFest in Leipzig last winter.
