A hands-on workshop lead by contemporary artist Brett Graham, in which participants will work with black sand and small moulds.
The black sands reference the territories of Taranaki and Tainui Māori, featured in Tai Moana Tai Tangata. Lined by the black sands of Te Uru (the West Coast), this area reaches from the Manukau in the north to Ohawe in the south.
Places are limited to 15, so book now to avoid disappointment. The workshop is suitable for ages 15+.
A solo exhibition of new work by Brett Graham (Ngāti Kōroki Kahukura, Tainui), Govett-Brewster Art Gallery's 2019 Artist in Residence, is on show until 2 May 2021. The exhibition Tai Moana Tai Tangata is curated by Dr Anna-Marie White (Te Ātiawa).
Tai Moana Tai Tangata revisits key events of New Zealand history as witnessed by Māori who suffered the most severe penalties of the colonial process.
Engaging the architecture of warfare on the colonial frontier and the language of war memorials in times of peace, the exhibition commemorates historic relationships and political pacts between Tainui and Taranaki iwi in the face of new challenges wrought by European settlement.
