Explore Antarctic art through the ages with Adele Jackson in this two-part course. She will show the role it has played in shaping our understanding of this exceptional continent.

Adele Jackson has recently completed a PhD thesis on the production and perceptions of Antarctic visual art. An artist herself she has spent seven summer seasons working in Antarctica, for two of which she was base leader for the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust at the Port Lockroy historic site.

Part 1: Shaping Antarctica
In this first session Adele presents the work of artists from the first image created south of the Antarctic Circle in 1773 through until the mid-twentieth century. She discusses the artist’s role in transforming uncharted spaces into knowable places.

Part 2: Exceptional Antarctica in an interconnected world
Part two will focus on the period from the mid-twentieth century through to the present day. With an emphasis on the 21st century, and including examples of her own work, Adele highlights the role of contemporary artists in challenging and expanding perceptions of the Antarctic environment.
