The Albany Street Jazz Loft is excited to announce the Duncan Haynes Trio from Wellington as it’s launch and inaugural concert. Recently returned to New Zealand shores after two decades performing and recording professionally in London, Louisiana, Lima (Peru) and Paris, esteemed pianist Duncan Haynes will present two sets of his original compositions.

Duncan is joined by up and coming Wellington-based double bassist/composer Seth Boy and creative jazz drummer/composer and Wellington Jazz Cooperative (WJC) founder Mark Lockett, also of international renown. Duncan’s sophisticated trio originals - which debuted at the Wellington Jazz Cooperative earlier in February - and have never been witnessed live in Dunedin - artfully blend post-bop, avant-garde jazz and classical influences (and more!) into a hard-driving, rhythmically and harmonically intricate and highly engaging stew.

"Consumate musicianship."

Launch at 6.50pm by Deputy Mayor Christine Garey.

Music starts 7pm.

Duncan Haynes Bio:
Haynes studied at Wellington’s Massey School of Jazz in the 90s alongside many leading lights of the current NZ contemporary jazz scene, and his string arrangements adorn Bic Runga’s multi-platinum selling NZ pop albums Drive (1997) and Beautiful Collision (2002).

His years overseas have seen him collaborate with a wide range of top musicians from genres as varied as world music, rock and blues and avant-garde jazz, and he has held residencies at a number of famous clubs and venues in London including: Ronnie Scotts, Wembley Stadium, Queens Club and Lords in addition to performing at jazz festivals across Europe from Warsaw, Poland and the Netherlands to Ireland and the popular Bestival on the Isle of Wight.

While working as a teacher of music in Peru he performed with a number of world-class artists including Susana Baca, Eva Ayllon and Andres Prado, and in Paris he established the world music/jazz crossover group Cuarteto Imaginario in 2017. Since returning to NZ in 2020 he has quickly become one of the most sought out players on the Wellington scene and has recently announced a South Island tour which includes his performance at the Albany Street Jazz Loft.
