What Goes Up. features banners and documentation from Elisabeth Pointon’s year-long trilogy of works in 2019 (which included flying one banner at the Auckland Art Fair and, later, another over the Auckland Art Fair).

On Sun 21 June 2020, we’re taking one of Pointon’s aerial banners to the sky. The banner will soar over Cuba Street and the general CBD area for approximately thirty minutes.

Pointon's banners were made in response to plane text, a public art project presented above the galleries, strips, and poolside parties of Art Basel Miami Beach in 2012. All but three of the artists were men and only one was of colour.

Discovering that it was in fact reasonably affordable to hire a plane, Pointon garnered the support of the local art community to create her own versions after establishing a relationship with an Auckland-based banner-towing company. As an artist of South-Asian heritage, voice and representation are underlying queries in much of Pointon’s practice. Her take on Art Basel is a whimsical performance of inclusion.

Please note, if flying conditions aren't suitable, the banner will take to the skies on Sat 27th June 2020.

This exhibition and flyover are supported by Wellington City Council Public Art Fund, and Airbubble Aerial Advertising and Banner Towing.
