Areez Katki is the creator of Bildungsroman, an exhibition opening in Otago Museum’s H D Skinner Annex, which focuses on his personal heritage, specifically Zoroastrianism and the Parsi community that his family belongs to.

Through needlework-based craft practice, the exhibition explores third-wave diaspora, asking questions of gender, sexuality and politics of the Zoroastrian community, alongside his own responses to this now-powerful minority in Mumbai.

In support of Bildungsroman, Katki is leading a free embroidery workshop in the H D Skinner Annex. Katki has extracted motifs from his mother's 1970s stenography notebooks for the workshop, and has borrowed shorthand to provide linguistic signifiers around matrilineal modes of expression that he inherited.

We encourage the participation of all ages, genders, and abilities to create a small fragment of their own during this period, using the knowledge and instructions provided by Areez.

We encourage participants to bring a small medium-weight textile square of their own, such as a 20 cm – 40 cm cotton handkerchief or tea towel.
