At this free workshop you will receive an introduction to taonga puoro practice and the instruments themselves, and experience demonstrations of how ngā taonga puoro can enhance and weave with other instruments from other cultures.

“The instruments fulfil many functions within Te Ao Māori including healing, the breath of our ancestors or depicting Te Wao Nui A Tane, Ira Atua, Ira Tangata, or a call to arms, dawning of the new day, communications with the Gods and IO, the planting of crops, for healing and wellbeing.”

Mahina-Ina Kingi-Kaui (Ngāi Tahu, Kati Mamoe, Ngati Porou, Te Atihaunui a Pāpārangi) is a musician, recording artist, producer, composer, presenter and activist. She has over 25 years experience of ngā taonga puoro. An accomplished player, teacher and practitioner, Mahina was described by Denis Welch (then Arts Editor for the Listener) as a “divinely voiced singer…” the voices of the past are breathing through her.”

Bring along your own instruments or just bring yourself!

Recommended for ages 15+ years old. Please help us get a sense of how many are coming by booking a free ticket. Spaces will also be available on the day.

This workshop is part of The Arts Centre's Matariki 2020 programme.
