NZTrio is known for concerts that combine some of the most loved and celebrated works in the repertoire with lesser-known compositions. This concert begins with the dark lyric beauty of Beethoven’s explosive C minor trio and finishes with Ravel's piano trio – one of the most treasured works written for violin, cello and piano.
Between these two masterworks, the programme features moving pieces by composers who have made Canada home. Born in Greece, Christos Hatzis has been a composition professor in Toronto since 1995 and established an impressive reputation. The sinuous melodies that another Canadian, Dinuk Wijeratene, winds through ‘Love Triangle’ evoke the sounds of Middle Eastern and North Indian music. Before the end of this work, each of the three members of the trio has the opportunity to shine in dazzling solos.
As a respected ambassador for contemporary New Zealand music, the NZTrio is proud to include a new commission, Kintsugi by Salina Fisher.
