Get your knickers in a knot in this very special embroidery workshop with artist Victoria McIntosh! In a playful twist on the traditional needlework sampler, join the stitch-circle to hand embroider a brand new pair of organic cotton underpants to take home, kindly supplied by our friends at Nisa.
Victoria will be joined by Terry Bellamak, ALRANZ Abortion Rights Aotearoa President, to discuss the historic law reforms passed by parliament in March this year, a change worked towards by the organisation for over four decades.
Nisa is a Wellington based company striving to create great undies and great employment for women from refugee backgrounds. Each ticket sold will contribute a pair of undies toward Nisa’s ‘donate a pair’ scheme, through which kiwi charity ReliefAid will distribute them to displaced women in Syria.

About the Artist
Victoria works with vintage textiles and stitch to explore ideas around body image, autonomy, and reproductive rights, employing humour as a useful tool to discuss serious topics. Born and based in Ōtepoti Dunedin, her practice uses found materials from op shops and second hand stores, combined with domestic crafts such as embroidery, beading and quilting, to translate collections of underwear and purses into soft sculptures that remember the shapes of the bodies they once held. Highlighting the many ways women and their bodies have been exploited and controlled, Victoria’s works are also a homage to her maternal grandmother who taught her many of the needlework skills she employs in her practice.
This event runs as part of Ā Mua: New Lineages of Making, which features projects by more than 20 makers from throughout Aotearoa, to explore and challenge the definition of craft in Aotearoa today.
