Come and visit this rare surviving example of a blockhouse, built in 1860 by scared settlers in the shadow of the New Zealand Wars.
This Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga property is not open to the public often, so bring the family between 11 am and 2 pm (no booking required)! This is a free event, but koha is welcome.
Inside the Blockhouse there’s an exhibition from the Expressions Whirinaki Arts and Entertainment Centre, telling the early story of Upper Hutt and its Blockhouse.
Please note that there is limited parking available in Blockhouse Lane, so parking on McHardie Street, or other surrounding streets, is recommended.
You can find out more about the Blockhouse’s story and location on Heritage New Zealand’s New Zealand Heritage List/Rārangi Kōrero online.
No booking required.
