Treaty of Waitangi Workshop

A one-day workshop facilitated by Vicky and Paul Roberts.

Vicki and Paul have 4 children and have lived in Tauranga for the past 12 years. Vicki has many years’ experience facilitating Treaty workshops with church groups, public service staff and in the tertiary education sector; Paul, with a lifelong interest in NZ history, has more recently joined the team as co-facilitator. They are both passionate about sharing the story of the Treaty of Waitangi and what it can mean for us today in Aotearoa NZ. For day jobs Vicki has worked in tertiary education until recently and Paul is a project manager in the construction industry. Vicki has whakapapa links to Nga Ruahine in Taranaki, and Paul is proud of his Welsh/Scottish roots whose ancestors on both sides settled in Wellington from the 1840s.

Outline of the Day:

9.30 - Morning Tea & Registration
9.45 - Part 1: Events around the signing of the Treaty on Feb 6th
12.00 - Lunch (shared)
12.45 - Part 2: 1840 -1890 The establishment of the settler government, the NZ wars, and the impacts of colonisation
2.30 - Afternoon Tea
2.45 - Part 3: Status of the Treaty today, ongoing impacts of colonisation, and potential paths forward.

Preparation for the Workshop

If you have not had much of a background to the Treaty you could read Claudia Orange's The Story of a Treaty (2013) or as an e-book (2016). The book takes a couple of hours to read, has lots of pictures and gives a good overview.

When you register, please let us know your level of knowledge:

- Very little
- Have read Claudia Orange - get the general idea
- A lot - and interested to learn more
- Burning questions I have wanted to ask
