Traditional Māori healing romiromi wananga can ignite the inherent ancestral Māori healing wisdom that you may already possess. In 2003, the late Papa Hohepa De La Mere, Whaanau-Apa-nui Tohunga Ahurewa (a priest of a higher order), asked us as romiromi students, how we were going to pass this ancient form of Māori healing knowledge to others. For over a decade of working with and being mentored by Tohunga, my PhD thesis sought to determine whether or not the philosophies and rituals of traditional Māori healing romiromi could contribute to the holistic wellbeing of the whānau. A key finding identified the ancient philosophies of Māori healing romiromi was ‘a way of life’ that had the potential to heal the whole family.

In supporting whai-ora on their journey to wellness, it is vital to ensure that you as a health practitioner/advisor are doing your own healing. There is a certain energy in the mauri (life force) of people who are unwell. If we are not continually clearing and cleansing ourselves spiritually, we can become stagnant and be like a magnet attracting more and more of that spiritual energy. This can result in becoming quite heavy and feeling as though you are not quite yourself. Unfortunately, this can work two ways, where you can also pass on the heavy energy of unwellness on to others with whom you interact with each day.

The first romiromi weekend workshop starts this weekend – the 1st and 2nd February, 2020 and will be held in Hastings. Each day begins at 10am. The cost of each wānanga is $300. Each participant must bring healthy food to share, a sarong for doing the hula and bathers for the purepure ceremony on Saturday afternoon.
