They Live is a 1988 American science-fiction action thriller film written and directed by John Carpenter.

The film tells the story of a drifter, who discovers through special sunglasses a global conspiracy that the human race is being controlled by aliens. The aliens are concealing their appearance and manipulating people to spend money, breed, and accept the status quo through subliminal messaging.

They Live is a thought-provoking film that is both campy and entertaining and the most topical film of Carpenter’s four-decade career.
