This exhibition was created by Māngere local, Aasha-Samara Nimo. Born and bred in Māngere, Nimo is of Tongan, Cook Islands, Niuean and Pākehā descent. She has a communications degree from AUT University, where she honed her skills for photography, and for standing up for what she believes in. Much of the motivation for her communications work is driven by the lack of diverse people and subject matter on certain platforms. In her emerging creative practice, “There’s an emphasis on both my aesthetic and an interest in diversity.” Mangere Arts Centre - Ngā Tohu o Uenuku presents her work as a celebration of the creativity of locals in this area, as part of its tenth anniversary celebrations, Te Huritau Tekau.

Her photographic works honour the quiet, complex richness of family relationships. The exhibition is inspired by the photographer and her sisters' intricate childhood experiences with one another. It is a vulnerable exploration into the intimacy and levels of emotional connection between sisters. Reminisce is a signature look in her work, Nimo experiments with both dreamy colour saturation and nostalgic overtones. Her work showcases the healing realities of everyday lives. Her works capture varied experiences of sisterhood including difficult situations like immigration, bullying, anxiety, grief and loss; alongside warm-scented memories of childhood.

Māngere Arts Centre- Ngā Tohu o Uenuku is open 9am – 5pm Monday – Friday

Exhibition Opening: 11am, Saturday 03 October 2020
