Whakapapa, phenotypes and whakataukī underpin the work in Whakatau Miromiro, a new exhibition by Terri Te Tau. Her embroidery on linen was created in conversation with Māori and Pacifika scientists who shared whakataukī around particular species they work with and the relationships revealed through those whakataukī.

Aspects of the work are speculative, delving into possible biological tools for conservation and how whakapapa and mātauranga Māori provide perspectives in how their future application might be ethically navigated.

Terri Te Tau (Ngāti Kahungunu, Rangitāne ki Wairarapa) is an artist and writer. She completed a PhD in Creative Arts from Massey University in 2015 and is a member of Mata Aho Collective. She was a Postdoctoral Fellow at CARE - The Cultural Centred Approach to Research Centre at Massey University in 2018 and 2019 and is currently teaching Māori medium art in Whare Kura alongside her art and writing practice.

Opening: Friday, 27 November, 5:30pm

Artist Talk: Saturday, 28 November, 11am
