Imogen Morris

Icarus finding his wings (and his hubris!), the horns of Tennyson’s Elfland echoing through the valley, the mythical breath of the lion-headed goddess Sakhmet these stories and more await in Telling Tales, a concert of contemporary works for solo recorder presented by Imogen Morris. Whether depicting colourful characters, dwelling in a single salient moment, or simply recounting a story in its entirety, the pieces featured in the programme explore tales that have been told for generations.

The concert includes works by Isang Yun, Liza Lim, Markus Zahnhausen and many more, as well as the premiere of Euryale’s Lament on the Death of Medusa by New Zealand’s own Janet Jennings.

About the artist
Fascinated by early and contemporary music alike, Imogen is active both as a soloist and in a variety of ensemble settings. She has performed concerts in Germany, Austria, and South Korea, as well as with leading New Zealand ensembles such as Age of Discovery, NZ Barok, and the Karlheinz Company. She is especially passionate about developing New Zealand’s unique voice in recorder playing, and frequently performs and premieres works by New Zealand composers.

Imogen is the artist-teacher for recorder at the University of Auckland, where she is also currently completing a PhD in musicology, supervised by Associate Professors Allan Badley, James Tibbles, and Nancy November.

In 2017, Imogen completed a Master of Music in recorder under the tutelage of Prof. Peter Holtslag at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg. Prior to this, she received her Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours from the University of Auckland, studying under Jessica Shaw. Her education has been augmented by masterclasses with Han Tol, Myriam Eichberger, Peter van Heyghen, and Martin Ripper, among others.
