Stronger at the Broken Places - Fundraising Art Auction

This exhibition and fundraising auction brings together well-known and emerging artists from around Hawkes Bay to encourage and celebrate the resilience of mothers on their parenting journey.

We have been thrilled to have well-known artists Peter Madden, Angus Walker and Patrick Tyman donate artwork for the fundraiser. The exhibition promises to be an eclectic array of local talent, colour and inspiration. Don’t miss the opportunity to find a treasure that you will take home and enjoy while supporting local Hawkes Bay families.

Two charities will be the beneficiaries of the proceeds from the opening night auction and the two week long art exhibition. They are the Breastfeeding Support Café, ‘Pepi and Kai’ and the ‘Hyde and Seek’ Fund which will be launched on opening night. Both charities contribute to meeting the needs of mothers emotionally and practically as they navigate the life changing events of pregnancy and motherhood.

For some mothers, the broken-ness of unexpected outcomes and grief is painful and difficult but they emerge from their challenges, stronger at those broken places.

Ernest Hemingway said it well in the novel, ‘Farewell to Arms’; ‘The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are stronger at the broken places.’

About the Charities:

Pepi and Kai Breastfeeding Cafe is a drop in facility held once a week in Napier on Thursdays and in Hastings on Fridays for mothers who need help with many different feeding issues that assail them in the first year of their baby’s life. It is run by a paid lactation consultant and volunteers. There is no DHB funding for this but is a lifeline for mothers who struggle with all sorts of emotional and physical issues around parenting, breastfeeding, sleeping and their baby’s behaviour.

The other charity is the Hyde and Seek Fund. It will be launched at the opening night of the ‘Stronger at the Broken Places’ Art Exhibition. It’s a discretionary fund for women who are experiencing anxiety, post-partum depression and post-traumatic stress after baby loss, an unexpected delivery outcome or unmet expectation around motherhood. The fund will offer grants to health professionals to attend PADA workshops that raise awareness for perinatal depression and anxiety that accompanies birth trauma. It is named after the Hyde triplets who were born prematurely last year. It is a play on words addressing the emotional state of women who avoid anything to do with pregnancy after a traumatic birth, but are healed by finding their own unique way to healing through a customised plan, with help from a counsellor.
